Tenerife, a new climber's paradise

Tenerife, a new climber's paradise

Tenerife, the largest of the seven Canary Islands, is best known for its warm climate, volcanic beaches, carnival and its delicious bananas.

But there is one thing you probably don’t know about, and that's the high quality of its rock climbing  !

With an average of 2000 routes, spread on 20 different sectors, Tenerife has nothing to enyv to the rest of the Iberian peninsula.

It offers everything a climber could possibly dream of.

A  high quality of rock and a large amount of routes for everyone

High quality rock and seemingly endless routes for all skill levels, the rock on Tenerife is just amazing and this red basalt is unique in Europe. Reminiscent of Colorado, those nice and long cracks are perfect for trad climbing.

With the large amount of routes on the island, you will definitely find yourself a nice little project..

Test the waters on a beginner route in Tamadaya, known as the “school sector” or jump on something more challenging like the massive roof of La Galeria, which has the hardest route in the Canary (Cuscus el copiloto, 8c+)

Feel more like some bouldering? Rent a crash pad in Arico and from there you can easily reach El Poris for a nice day of bouldering with your friends in the canyon

Fancy a multipitch with an amazing view from the top ? Go to el Cañadas del Teide and enjoy some of the most original rock shape of the island, and if the sky is clear you will see the whole Archipelago.

A climate that lets you climb all year long

Located 100km West of Morocco, Tenerife is know for its “Eternal spring”. The warm Sirocco blowing from the Sahara desert keeps most of the island dry, while the cold Atlantic currents cool it down. Not surprisingly, this makes Tenerife the perfect destination for climbing all year long. The best season however remains from September to April

Many fun activities to do on your rest days

Rock climbing isn’t the only outdoor activities you would find in Tenerife. Its large atlantic coast line offers fantastic surf spots, like in Las Americas, or even kite surfing in El Medano, as well as many other watersports (stand up paddle, sea kayaking, snorkeling or scuba diving)

If you don’t feel like getting wet, you can hike or bike in one of the several natural parks of the island, or climb to the summit of Pico de Teide (3718) and enjoy a panoramic view of the Canary Islands

Welcoming people, cheap accommodation and delicious food

If you came to Tenerife for climbing, then make sure to check Arico - the village where everything happens. Surrounded by climbing spots that are all within walking distance, you will also find a climbing shop that sells guide books, offers rental equipment as well as advice on different accommodation options, including two climbing hostels. There you will meet welcoming locals and climbers from all around the world and to complete the Tenerife experience, stop by Antonio’s and try some amazing local food.

How to go, where to stay, what to eat ?

The cheapest way to reach Tenerife is by plane since several low cost companies offer cheap flights all year long to both of Tenerife's airports. Flying from Barcelona probably remains the most economic solution, but decent priced flights from the UK, Germany, and Scandinavia can be found online. Arico being the center of climbing on the island, good accomodation for climbers can be found there at : Tenerife Climbing House or The Basecamp. Bar Antonio and Bar Jeronimo are two good places to eat or to get take away sandwiches.
If you decide to stay longer in more remote places, you can always take some LYO in your backpack.

I’m really into hiking so I decided to search some places I’ve never been before and this actually got my attention. I found an article to a place in Spain called Canary Island https://www.canaryislandsinfo.co.uk/tenerife/places/masca/ and many people have been going here to hike. Actually, the place has many activities to offer like water sports and trekking, I was planning to make a trip here next year to experience the island myself, Do you guys have any suggestions or advice
regarding to the place? It would be a great help. Thanks!
